Short history on Christiania Bikes
Christiania Smedie (The Forge of Christiania) is the oldest existing company of the Freetown of Christiania, founded in the early 70´s.
As the Freetown was declared as a car-free town, there was a great need for alternative transportation of goods and children. For that purpose Christiania Smedie developed and produced the well known bicycle trailers, which became a great succes with more than 10.000 produced trailers in the years oround 1980.
The Petersen Bike (www.pedersen-bike.dk - history) was also originally produced at Christiania Smedie by Jesper Sölling, who re-envented The Petersen Bike. Later he decided to make his own company www.pedersen-bike.dk. In the early 80´s Jesper Sölling also pruduced a small amount of middle-weight 3-wheeled transport bikes.
In the middle of the 80´s Lars Engström from Christiania Smedie produced the first Christiania Bike in the shape and size as we known today (1984 - gallery). And that was a scoop. It fitted great into modern traffic, and became such a success that we in late 80´s realized that our workshop at Christiania Smedie was much too small for the production. In 1989 We found a fitting place on the island Bornholm, and moved the production of bikes and trailers to that location.
In 1992 we decited to split Christiania Smedie into two companies: Christiania Smedie in Copenhagen and Christiania Smedie i/s on Bornholm. Bornholm kept the production and the rights of the bikes and the trailers, and Copenhagen continued as a sales-and-service shop of the products from Bornholm.
Christiania Smedie opened a very early internet-shop with the domain www.christianiabikes.dk, and a couple of yers later Bornholm made a presentation-web-site on www.christianiabikes.com.
Since then, the Christiania Smedie in Copenhagen (.dk) have increased the sale each year, and the factory on Bornholm (.com) has grown into a great succes, exporting most of their production.
